Gregg Wallace Steps Away from MasterChef Amid Historical Misconduct Allegations

Issues ArisingGregg Wallace Steps Away from MasterChef Amid Historical Misconduct Allegations

Gregg Wallace, long-time presenter of MasterChef, is temporarily stepping back from the show while historical allegations of misconduct are investigated. The claims, which span nearly two decades and multiple programs, have prompted the production company Banijay UK to launch an external review.

The allegations include reports of inappropriate comments and behaviour on set, with 13 individuals coming forward to detail incidents across five different shows from 2005 to 2022. Specific accusations include inappropriate jokes, sexually explicit comments, and instances of behaviour that left staff members feeling uncomfortable.

Among the allegations, Wallace was reportedly warned by the BBC in 2018 following complaints about his conduct on the show Impossible Celebrities. At the time, an investigation concluded that some of his behaviour was unprofessional, leading to a formal warning and measures to prevent a recurrence. However, further allegations have since emerged, suggesting additional incidents on programs such as MasterChef, Inside the Factory, and Channel 5’s Big Weekends.

While several individuals have described negative experiences with Wallace, others have spoken positively, characterizing his comments as light-hearted or benign. Despite the mixed accounts, Banijay UK has committed to a thorough and impartial investigation into all claims.

As the investigation proceeds, Wallace will step back from his presenting duties on MasterChef. The production company has emphasized its commitment to maintaining a safe and respectful working environment for all staff and encouraged anyone with concerns to come forward.

Episodes of MasterChef: The Professionals that have already been recorded will continue to air as planned. Wallace has been a prominent figure on the show since 2005, co-hosting alongside John Torode. Over the years, he has also appeared on various other programs, including Saturday Kitchen, Eat Well for Less, and Supermarket Secrets.

Wallace, who was recognized in the Queen’s Birthday Honours in 2022 for his contributions to food and charity, has declined to provide further comments on the allegations. The outcomes of the investigation will likely determine his future involvement with the series and other productions.
