Jessica Tisch has officially assumed the role of NYPD commissioner following a period of instability marked by high-profile resignations, federal investigations, and the indictment of the city’s mayor. Her predecessor’s interim replacement was also subject to a federal search, adding further scrutiny to the department’s leadership transition.
During her swearing-in ceremony at One Police Plaza, Tisch emphasized her commitment to ensuring public safety and restoring confidence in the city’s police force. Her appointment was announced last week by the city’s leadership.
Tisch brings a wealth of experience to the role. Before being named sanitation commissioner in April 2022, she served as the city’s commissioner of the Department of Information Technology and Telecommunications, now rebranded as the Office of Technology and Innovation. Her career with the NYPD spans 12 years, beginning as a counterterrorism analyst and culminating in her role as deputy commissioner of information technology, where she managed critical operations, including the agency’s 911 system.
As sanitation commissioner, Tisch prioritized initiatives to improve the city’s cleanliness, including a trash containerization project aimed at addressing New York City’s rat problem. Her efforts were well-received and demonstrated her ability to lead large-scale urban initiatives.
Following her departure from the Department of Sanitation, Javier Lojan was sworn in as the acting commissioner. Lojan, who has been with the department for 25 years, began as a sanitation worker and rose through the ranks to become the first deputy commissioner. His extensive experience positions him to continue advancing the department’s goals.
Tisch now takes on the critical role of leading the NYPD during a challenging time, focusing on public safety, community trust, and maintaining order in the nation’s largest police department.
