A British father is being hailed as a hero after rescuing his 11-month-old son from a car trapped in rising floodwaters during Storm Bert, which brought heavy rain and strong winds to the U.K. over the weekend.

The dramatic incident occurred on Saturday, November 23, in Todmorden, West Yorkshire, as the storm caused widespread flooding across parts of the country. While driving, 22-year-old Andre Randles encountered unexpected floodwaters after being diverted from his usual route. A sudden dip in the road left his car submerged and sinking rapidly.

Despite being unable to swim, Randles managed to pull himself and his son, Luca, out of the car through a window as water flooded the vehicle. A nearby homeowner provided shelter for the father and child after the rescue.

Storm Bert has caused significant disruption across the U.K., with authorities reporting heavy rain and strong winds leading to severe flooding in multiple areas. The U.K.’s Meteorological Office noted that some regions received over 130 mm (5.1 inches) of rainfall within 24 hours, and wind gusts exceeded 75 mph in exposed areas. Rising river levels have exacerbated the situation, prompting warnings for continued flooding even after the rain subsided.

Images of the flooding showcased cars submerged in water and rivers overflowing their banks, with areas such as York and Worcester among those heavily affected. Emergency services and meteorologists have urged residents to remain cautious as cleanup and recovery efforts continue.

This incident highlights the dangers posed by extreme weather events, as well as the quick thinking and bravery demonstrated by individuals like Randles during such emergencies.
